Our Story

The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Virginia opened May 5, 1984 through a collaboration of Roanoke Hospital Association, the Junior League of Roanoke Valley, and McDonald’s Operators of Southwest Virginia. It was the 57th Ronald McDonald House to open nationwide.

In September of 2007, the Ronald McDonald Family Room opened on the 14th floor of the Carilion Children’s Hospital.

Milestones

1983 Groundbreaking and construction begins.
1984 Ronald McDonald House of Southwest Virginia opens 18 bedroom house.
1990 McDonald's paid for a commercial kitchen to be added.
2004 Playground built, funded by the Junior League.
2006 Large dining room added with guest kitchen.
2007 Carilion Children’s Hospital opens the Ronald McDonald Family Room, located on the 14th floor just outside of the 60 bed NICU.
2017 Adopt a Room Program is launched and 5 bedrooms are renovated.
2018 Opening of the Magic Room.
