When a child is hospitalized, parents and caregivers are suddenly thrust into a world of uncertainty and stress. Long days and nights spent at the bedside often leave little time—or energy—for meeting even basic needs like eating a meal, doing laundry, or simply
taking a breath. That’s where the Ronald McDonald Family Room steps in.
Located just steps away from pediatric and NICU units, the Family Room provides a comforting space where families can rest, regroup, and recharge—without ever leaving the hospital. Stocked with snacks, quick meals, fresh coffee, and even freshly packed lunches, the Family Room offers more than convenience—it provides comfort and care during an incredibly difficult time.
For Brooke and her husband, the Family Room was a lifeline during their son Evan’s three-month NICU stay at Carilion Children’s.
“We were close enough to not need to stay at the House,” Brooke shared, “but we used the Ronald McDonald Family Room just about every day. It was a quiet refuge for us to take a breath or have a snack while staying on the same floor of the hospital as our son. We never wanted to be too far for too long.”
Fighting Food Insecurity, One Meal at a Time
For families dealing with a child’s medical crisis, hospital cafeteria meals or takeout can quickly become unaffordable—or may not be accessible at all due to a child’s medical needs. The Family Room helps reduce that burden by offering a steady supply of free food, drinks, and warm meals.
Thanks to generous donations and the hard work of dedicated volunteers, families can count on having one less thing to worry about. In fact, the food offerings in the Family Room are often the only consistent meals a parent may eat during their child’s hospital stay.
Brooke understands that challenge well. Evan is medically complex, and even after his NICU stay, the family spent many more days and nights in the hospital.
“Having a child in the hospital is expensive for so many reasons, especially when travel is involved,” she explained. “RMHC takes on some of that cost for us by providing a free place to lay our heads and fuel our bodies.”
Volunteers: The Heart of the Family Room
The Family Room program would not be possible without its incredible team of volunteers. From stocking shelves to preparing coffee and offering a listening ear, these volunteers make the space feel like home. Many return week after week, forming bonds with families and hospital staff alike.
“Our volunteers are truly the backbone of the Family Room,” said Rebecca Brockman, RMHC-SWVA Volunteer Manager, who oversees the space. “They bring kindness, energy, and a sense of calm to families who are facing some of the most difficult moments of their lives.”
Families Feel the Difference
Whether it’s a hot cup of coffee after a sleepless night or a warm meal shared between worried parents, the Ronald McDonald Family Room provides more than nourishment—it offers a sense of normalcy and hope.
“Whether we are here at home or far away,” Brooke said, “we always know there is a place and a group of staff and volunteers ready to take care of us so that we can focus on taking care of our sweet boy.”
