Dinner Time Program
When a child is receiving medical treatment for serious illness or injury, taking away the worry of “what’s for dinner?” is a wonderful relief. Our guest families receive this type of kindness regularly from our dedicated Dinner Time volunteers. Our goal is to provide a cooked dinner every night and we are always seeking out volunteers. You don’t need to be an expert chef! You just have to want to give families a little peace of mind.
Updated list of available dates for April through June
Who can participate?
You, your family, office, club, church group, friends, and any other group are invited to assist in helping families feel more at home by providing an evening meal once or on a regular basis.
Volunteers must be over the age of 16 to volunteer in the kitchen. There are other chores that are possible for groups with members who are under 16; please notify House Manager prior to arrival if you will have any other the age of 16.
How many will we serve?
We ask that you plan to cook for approximately 40 guests. Of course groups are always welcome to eat!
When do we prepare our meal?
Buffet-style Meals are served daily from 5:00 – 6:30 PM. We ask that you have the meal prepared by this time. It is also helpful if your group can assist with cleanup following dinner.
Where do we prepare our meal?
Our large, fully equipped kitchen makes meal preparation simpler. Not only are you assisting families during difficult times but you can also have fun in the process. We suggest a practical working group size of 1-5.
You can provide the entire meal as a donation
you may use any of the items stocked within the House pantry and freezer, including meats.
All utensils, cookware, serving dishes and beverages necessary to prepare and serve meals are provided.
What should we cook?
Just like you, our families enjoy a variety of food! Does your family have a favorite comfort food? Do you have a recipe that has been in your family for generations? Or are you known for a signature dish? We would love for you to share one of these recipes with our families as part of your menu!
There is no set menu. Each group is asked to choose their own dishes and consider other options as well as traditional dinners:
Soup & Sandwiches
Home style ‘comfort’ meals are always enjoyed!
Who cleans up?
At 6:30pm all leftovers can be placed in plastic containers that are provided by RMH and stored in the guest refrigerator. Many families choose to stay at the Hospital past the serving time so leftovers are always a welcomed treat later in the evening. We also ask that you clean up the kitchen, wash any dirtied dishes, and put them away.
How do we sign-up?
All you have to do is check with your volunteer group and find a few dates that work for everyone. An ongoing meals calendar is maintained in the Ronald McDonald House office to schedule and plan groups and tentative menus.
Please see our Dinner Time Program Handbook.
